Malin Dugong Robot

Where we began

Conservation work needs knowledge of how animals live and what is happening in their habitats. Dugongs are difficult to observe, leaving researchers with limited information about their behaviour and surroundings. Malin began with the question of how an underwater system could help collect that information with less need for people to be physically present.

How we approached it

We worked with specialist partners to explore a research robot shaped like a dugong, combining AI, sonar, cameras and sensors. The research brought animal observation and environmental data collection into the same underwater system. We wanted to explore what this combination of tools could record, and how the information might help researchers understand dugongs and the waters they live in.
